Description
The Japanese pagoda tree, also called the Chinese scholar tree and pagoda tree (scientific name: Styphnolobium japonicum), is a type of tree belonging to the pea family Fabaceae in the subfamily Faboideae. This tree is indigenous to China, but it was also introduced in Japan, which gave it its common name. It has become a well-liked ornamental tree in North America, Europe, and South Africa, thanks to its late summer flowering, which happens after most other flowering trees have already bloomed. The tree can reach heights of around 10-20 meters and a similar width. It also provides a high-quality dark brown timber.
Sophora japonica, also known as Chinese pagoda tree or Japanese pagoda tree, is primarily found in eastern Asia, particularly in China and Japan. It is alternatively referred to as Styphnolobium japonicum or Chinese Scholar. Rutin and quercetin, two flavonoids widely utilized in various commercial products, are derived from the dried flowers and buds of Sophora japonica, commonly known as Huai mi. The plant holds significant importance in traditional medicine practices of China, Japan, and Korea, as it has been traditionally used to assist in the cessation of bleeding.
