Characteristics of pharmaceutical intermediates

Currently, China has successfully developed and mass-produced several varieties of quinolone antibiotics, which mainly include norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, enoxacin, lomefloxacin, and fleroxacin. The three most widely produced antibiotics among them are norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and ofloxacin, collectively accounting for a remarkable 98% of the total domestic production of fluoroquinolone antibacterials.

China is a major producer of fluorine-containing drugs and intermediates, thanks to its abundant fluorite reserves. The country's production of fluorine-containing intermediates, particularly fluorobenzene intermediates, has a long history and is currently facing over-capacity. However, the development of benzotrifluoride intermediates has gained momentum in recent years. In terms of heterocyclic aromatic compounds, such as fluorinated pyridines, only a few research units and manufacturers in China possess the synthesis technology for fluorine-containing pyridine intermediates. Therefore, the focus in the coming years will be on the development of fluorine-containing pyridine intermediates in the domestic market.

China has also emerged as the world's largest producer of antipyretic and analgesic drugs. The country's output of drugs such as aspirin, paracetamol, and analgin exceeds 10,000 tons. Additionally, phenacetin, aminopyrine, and antipyrine are produced in quantities exceeding 1000 tons. The production of antipyretic and analgesic drugs in China is experiencing rapid growth, with an expected annual rate of around 8% in the future. This growth has resulted in significant development in the production of intermediates used in the manufacturing process of these drugs. Numerous manufacturers are involved in the production of these intermediates, further supporting the expansion of the antipyretic and analgesic drug industry.

The consumption and export of paracetamol in China saw a rapid rise in 2003, with the export volume reaching 28,163 tons. Despite a slower growth rate in the first half of 2004, exports continued to increase, with the export volume in January-May 2004 slightly higher than the same period in the previous year. Para-aminophenol, an important intermediate for paracetamol synthesis, has also grown rapidly in recent years, with an annual production of around 32,000 tons in China. It is projected that domestic paracetamol production will hit 50,000 tons by 2005, and with the pharmaceutical industry consuming around 45,000 tons of p-aminophenol and other fields adding to the demand, the total annual requirement for p-aminophenol will be approximately 50,000 tons. Consequently, a significant market gap exists in the p-aminophenol market, and its utilization prospects are broad.
